On this day five years ago, 12th November 2020, The Foundation for Innovation and Research – Malta (FiR.mt) was officially founded with a mission to strengthen Malta’s position as a hub for research and innovation across Europe and the Mediterranean region. Today, FiR.mt stands proud as an established Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) and a platform that supports both local and international researchers working in Malta.

Over these five years, FiR.mt has grown from a bold Technopolis vision into one of Malta’s most impactful contributors to Horizon Europe. Notably, in 2022, FiR.mt ranked among the Top 5 Maltese net contributors to Horizon Europe, coordinating major research projects that address future energy systems and sustainability.

Over the past five years, FiR.mt has become a central home for local and international researchers working on innovative and applied research in Malta, supporting national talent and strengthening the country’s position within Europe’s research and innovation landscape. Through its dedicated Research Management and Administration services, FiR.mt enables successful participation in Horizon Europe and other international programmes while also fostering postgraduate research opportunities in collaboration with leading international partners. The Foundation has established itself as a key driver in the energy transition, sustainability, digitalisation, and emerging technological sectors, and continues to play a pivotal role as a trusted partner for the EU widening country ecosystem.
