  • Oct, 15, 2026

The Foundation for Innovation and Research – Malta (FiR.mt) participated in the Digitalising the Future Conference, where its founding Chair, Prof. Dr Inġ. Brian Azzopardi, delivered an invited keynote presentation entitled “MARINEX1.0: Ports as Living Laboratories for Sustainable Marine Innovation.”

The presentation introduced MARINEX1.0, a research and innovation initiative exploring the application of digital technologies, environmental monitoring, data analytics and digital twins to support more sustainable maritime and port operations.

Particular attention was given to the potential of Malta’s Grand Harbour as a real-world environment for research, experimentation and technology validation, including planned collaboration with Transport Malta.

The keynote also introduced FiR.mt’s wider Living Labs approach, connecting research infrastructure, industry needs, public authorities and scientific expertise to address practical challenges.

Through these activities, FiR.mt aims to strengthen opportunities for collaborative research, technology demonstration, specialised research services and evidence-based decision-making in the maritime sector.

The conference provided an opportunity to engage with stakeholders from industry, technology and research, and to explore how Malta can contribute to sustainable marine innovation in the Mediterranean.
