Cooperation Agreement with Typhoon HIL

  • Feb, 06, 2026

The Foundation for Innovation and Research – Malta (FiR.mt) has signed a cooperation agreement with Typhoon HIL, strengthening national research infrastructure in power systems, electric mobility, and advanced grid technologies.

Under the agreement, Typhoon HIL is providing hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation equipment to FiR.mt, enabling advanced real-time testing and validation of power electronics, control algorithms, and cyber-physical energy systems. The equipment will be used exclusively for research and training activities, supporting both academic and industry-oriented research initiatives.

The cooperation will enhance ongoing and future work in areas such as smart grids, Volt-VAR control, power electronics, and electric mobility, while enabling realistic testing environments that bridge simulation and deployment. The availability of HIL infrastructure is particularly relevant for validating control strategies before field implementation, reducing development risk and accelerating innovation uptake.

In addition to research use, the agreement foresees joint dissemination, training, and knowledge-exchange activities, including workshops, tutorials, and collaborative events with academic and industrial partners. These activities will contribute to building national capacity and strengthening Malta’s participation in European research and innovation programmes.

This cooperation aligns with FiR.mt’s mission to develop strategic research infrastructure that supports applied research, industry collaboration, and future innovation actions addressing the energy transition
