Supporting research, society, and future innovation
At Foundation for Innovation and Research – Malta (FiR.mt), research is not a fixed programme, it is a living, evolving ecosystem grounded in Malta and connected to Europe and the wider Mediterranean region. From this base, FiR.mt brings together science, engineering, and social sciences and humanities (SSH) to ensure that innovation is not only technically sound, but also socially relevant, inclusive, and impactful. Through Living Labs, applied research, education, and public engagement, the foundation operates at the interface between knowledge and real-world implementation. Your support helps sustain and grow this ecosystem.
Rooted in Malta, Connected to the Region
FiR.mt is proudly anchored in Malta—an island state with unique energy, environmental, and societal challenges that make it an ideal real-world laboratory for innovation. At the same time, the foundation operates across borders, engaging partners and initiatives throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. This dual perspective allows FiR.mt to:
- develop solutions tailored to island and constrained environments
- contribute to European research and innovation priorities
- act as a bridge between regional challenges and international expertise
Supporting FiR.mt means strengthening Malta’s role as a knowledge hub for research and innovation, with impact that extends far beyond its shores.
An Open and Evolving Research Platform
FiR.mt is not limited to predefined thematic areas. While current activities span energy, digitalisation, sustainability, and societal innovation, the foundation remains open to new thematics and emerging fields. It actively welcomes respected and trusted Principal Investigators (PIs) who are willing to anchor ambitious ideas in Malta and collaborate within a shared research ecosystem.
This openness enables:
- the exploration of new scientific and societal challenges
- the creation of interdisciplinary research directions
- the development of future-oriented innovation pathways
Your support helps create the conditions where new ideas—and new leaders—can take shape.
Why your support matters
As an independent, non-profit research organisation, FiR.mt operates beyond the boundaries of individual projects. While funded programmes provide essential support, they rarely cover the continuity, flexibility, and foundational capacity required to maintain long-term impact. Sustaining research environments, enabling interdisciplinary work, engaging society, and supporting new ideas all depend on ongoing commitment. Your donation helps ensure that research remains continuous, adaptive, and human-centred.
What your donation enables
Your contribution supports a wide range of interconnected activities. It advances research and innovation in areas such as energy systems, digitalisation, and sustainability, while also strengthening the role of Social Sciences and Humanities, including behavioural research, public engagement, education, ethics, and policy. It supports the maintenance and evolution of Living Laboratories and research infrastructure, where solutions are tested and validated in real-life conditions. These environments require continuous operation, monitoring, and upgrading. It contributes to the operational structures that sustain the foundation’s work: coordination, digital infrastructure, collaboration development, dissemination, and training.
Importantly, it also enables new projects and future ideas. Many transformative initiatives begin before formal funding is secured. Early-stage exploration, pilot studies, proposal development, and the emergence of new thematic areas all rely on seed support. Your contribution helps transform ideas into projects, and projects into impact.
Supporting a specific initiative
While general support is essential, you may also choose to direct your donation. You can contribute to a specific area, such as research, SSH, education, Living Labs, or operations, or support a particular initiative or emerging idea. This includes new thematic directions led by Principal Investigators, helping them establish and grow their work within the FiR.mt ecosystem.
How to contribute
We aim to make supporting FiR.mt simple and transparent. You may make an immediate contribution through a secure Stripe donation link, supporting the continuity of our activities.
Alternatively, you may indicate your preferred area or initiative through a dedicated form, allowing your contribution to be aligned with a specific purpose, including new and emerging projects.
A continuous and expanding impact
Supporting FiR.mt means contributing to a system designed to endure and evolve. It means sustaining research environments that continue to generate knowledge beyond individual funding cycles. It means enabling education and capacity building. It means supporting interdisciplinary work where engineering meets society. And it means creating space for new thematics, new ideas, and new leaders to emerge. Above all, it means contributing to a model of research and innovation that is open, collaborative, Malta-based, and globally relevant.
Make a difference
Every contribution strengthens a research ecosystem dedicated to public benefit—rooted in Malta, connected to the region, and open to the future.
